Benefits Transition

The California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) is the nation’s largest nonfederal purchaser of public employee health benefits.

With healthcare costs rising, they chose Included Health to help improve healthcare access, quality, affordability, and equity for their members.

This meant that members would now turn to Included Health for all their healthcare needs instead of their insurance carrier.

This was a huge change to what members had been doing for years and would involve a massive undertaking in changing behavior and growing Included Health’s reputation among CalPERS enrollees.

My role

Working with the team, I helped build a new website for CalPERS members featuring essential information. I also created the deliverables for 60+ benefits fairs across the state of California to equip representatives with marketing materials to educate and engage members. I also wrote the 120+ page benefits guide sent to all members, defining the positioning, placement, and use cases for Included Health. Lastly, I built and deployed a custom email campaign to engage members with Included Health.

The outcome

This multi-channel marketing campaign achieved 55% household engagement and was the largest driver of member utilization, increasing clinical engagement by 17% while maintaining zero operational escalations.
